Storage units in Valencia when moving: prices and when it pays
Storing your belongings during a move in Valencia costs, as a market guide, €30–60 a month for a small unit of boxes, €60–100 for the contents of a studio and €100–150 for a two-bedroom flat. On top of that come two transport trips (there and back): approximately €140–210 each for a studio and €280–420 for a two-bedroom flat. Storage pays off when the gap between leaving one flat and moving into the next runs to weeks or months; for two or three days there is almost always a cheaper fix.
Below you will find how to choose between a guardamuebles and a trastero, which size you need, what the whole package costs and a step-by-step plan to organise it without overpaying.
Guardamuebles or trastero: what’s the difference
In Valencia the two words are often used interchangeably, but they are not the same thing:
- Self-storage unit (trastero). You rent a lockable unit of 1 to 20 m² in a monitored centre. You fit your own padlock, come and go during opening hours and add or remove things without telling anyone. This is what you want if you will need your winter clothes or paperwork while things are in storage.
- Managed storage (guardamuebles). The company stores your belongings in its warehouse, often in containers or on pallets, and charges by volume. Access is usually by appointment. It suits you if everything is going away for months untouched.
- Storage with collection (trastero con recogida). A middle ground: the storage company collects from your home and charges for the space. Convenient, but compare the collection fee with an hourly carrier.
Storage unit prices in Valencia by size
These are approximate market ranges for 2026. Prices depend heavily on the company, on whether the centre is in the city or on an industrial estate (polígono) in the metropolitan area, and on first-month offers, so always confirm them including VAT.
| What you store | Approx. volume | Unit size (guide) | Market price per month |
|---|---|---|---|
| Boxes, bike, suitcases | 1–3 m³ | 1–2 m² | €30–60 |
| Studio / single room | 6–10 m³ | 3–4 m² | €60–100 |
| Two-bedroom flat | 15–20 m³ | 6–8 m² | €100–150 |
| Three-bedroom flat | 25–35 m³ | 10–14 m² | from ~€150 |
The sizing comes from a simple rule: with ceilings of about 2.4 m and careful stacking, each square metre of floor holds roughly 2 m³ in practice. If you don’t take beds and wardrobes apart, you will need 30–50 % more space, and you pay for it every month. That is why it is worth booking furniture dismantling before anything goes into storage.
What the whole package costs: storage + transport
The most common mistake is comparing only the monthly price of the unit. Getting everything to the centre and back weighs almost as much as several months of rent. Using a carrier’s approximate hourly rates (van with driver €50/h, 2-hour minimum, and a mover at €20/h):
| Home | Transport per trip | There + back | 3 months of storage | Approximate total |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Studio | €140–210 | €280–420 | €180–300 | €460–720 |
| Two-bedroom flat | €280–420 | €560–840 | €300–450 | €860–1,290 |
| Three-bedroom flat | €540–720 | €1,080–1,440 | from ~€450 | from ~€1,530 |
Unloading at a centre with a loading bay, goods lift and trolleys is usually quicker than carrying everything up to a third floor with no lift, so trips often land at the lower end of the range. The carrier confirms the final price before starting.
When storage pays off (and when it doesn’t)
It pays off when:
- There is a gap of weeks or months between flats. Your lease ends on the 30th and the new place won’t be ready for six weeks.
- You are renovating. Two rooms have to be emptied for the works and the rest of the flat is already full.
- You are away for a season. Six months abroad and no point paying for an empty flat.
- You are selling. A flat with less furniture looks bigger at viewings.
It doesn’t pay off when:
- The gap is one to three days. It is usually better to negotiate an overlap on the keys with your landlord or move on the handover day itself.
- Your things are worth less than the storage bill. An old sofa stored for a year can cost more than a new one. Before renting a unit, consider a house clearance for anything you won’t use again.
How to organise storage in 7 steps
- Decide how long. That determines whether you need a unit with free access or a cheaper guardamuebles charged by volume.
- Make an inventory and declutter first. Everything that goes into storage is paid for twice in transport and every month in space.
- Work out the volume. Use the table above and round up: a unit that is too tight forces you into the next size.
- Compare three centres. Ask for the final price with VAT, the deposit, the minimum term, access hours, what the insurance covers and whether there is a loading bay or goods lift for the van.
- Pack for months, not days. Boxes of the same size stack better; the guide on how many moving boxes you need and how to pack will save you hours. Given Valencia’s humidity, protect mattresses and upholstery with breathable covers and don’t seal wooden furniture in plastic for months.
- Book the transport. For a quote you need both addresses, the floor and access details at the centre. If you are torn between hiring a van yourself and booking one with a driver, here is the comparison of van hire with or without a driver.
- Plan the return trip. Label which box goes to which room of the new flat and book the second trip early, especially if it falls on a Saturday or at the end of the month.
Insurance and what you can’t store
Ask what the centre’s insurance covers and up to what amount; many include basic cover and offer to extend it. Also check whether your home insurance (seguro de hogar) covers belongings kept outside the home: it depends on the policy. Almost every centre bans food, flammable or hazardous liquids and animals, and jewellery or original documents are best kept elsewhere. Read the contract before signing.
How MoveValencia can help
MoveValencia has no storage facility of its own and does not rent out units. What we do is help you estimate the volume and match you with an authorised local carrier from our network, who takes your belongings to the centre you choose and brings them back, either as part of an apartment move in Valencia or as a separate job. You can run the numbers with the prices calculator and then send us a WhatsApp or use the form on the site with photos: the carrier sends their quote and confirms the price before starting.
